Barcelona legend concerned with the club’s academy situation
The departure of Director of Methodology Joan Villa from La Masia, Barcelona’s academy has concerned Xavi Hernandez.
Villa decided to leave the post after the club failed to renew his contract and Barca’s legend feels that that leaves a very big void in the club’s popular academy.
“I am concerned about the situation of the Barcelona academy. I am very worried about the departure of Joan Vila. If you take Joan Vila out of Barca, what is Barca doing? This is the question. He’s the person with the most knowledge of Barcelona’s positional play. I don’t understand it. Joan is a fount of the wisdom of the Barcelona game. Paco Seirullo is another and also Albert Benaiges, who is now at Vissel Kobe with Iniesta. They are people that Barca has to take advantage of.” Xavi explained.
The departure of promising youngsters is another concern for the former midfield maestro and he adds that should Barca decide to let the kids leave, they should try and find whether they have the interest of returning later in their careers.
Eric Garcia, Jordi Mbolua and Sergio Gomez are the few faces that have left La Masia recently.
“In the end the player has the decision to go where he wants, but first they have to value Barca. Before making a decision, I would take the player and ask him if his dream is to play for Borussia Dortmund or Arsenal, or if they want to come back here later. Because if they leave they should know that, if I am here, they won’t have the chance to return,” Xavi said.
